Use and abuse of materials in aero-engines: Should you worry about flying?

Note changed date

Prof David Rugg, Rolls-Royce

Venue: BAWA Filton - Pavilion Lounge

Wednesday Jan 23rd, 2013 at 19:30

Joint event with the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Recent innovations in the area of experimental techniques and physically-based modelling are revolutionary with respect to the understanding that they can enable. The talk will outline the approach taken by Rolls-Royce to elucidate the mechanisms by which materials deform and fail. This will include discussion of the current alloys and main load regimes with an emphasis on titanium alloys. The research will be framed in the context of application to aero-engine components and service issues and will include impact tests and high strain rate behaviour.

The talk will be followed by a discussion and buffet.

Members and non-members are welcome.
