Over the 70 year period between the Whittle engine and the present day, the temperature capability of turbine blade alloys has increased by about 350 C. The speaker will describe this remarkable development, from forged Nimonic alloys through to today's third and fourth generation nickel single crystals - and will speculate on what the future may hold.
