Friction stir welding

The presentation will describe the historical development of friction technology in general and then focus on friction stir welding (FSW) in particular.
FSW is part of friction stir technology that embraces cladding, spot welding, material processing, near-net-shape manufacture and several variants of FSW. Common, to all these processes is the need for a suitable tool material which needs appropriate strength and resistance to wear at FSW operating temperatures. Moreover, the interaction of the tool with the parent material is important in that the right combination can provide the desired coupling between the probe and the work-piece.
The talk will be followed by a discussion and buffet.
Members and non-members are welcome.
